While On Campus
Macalester College is a preeminent liberal arts college with an educational program known for its high standards for scholarship and its special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. We would like to call attention to the following artistic events that reflected the 2011 Northland Bioneers Conference.
Earth Unseen
“Earth Unseen”, is an exhibit of the photographic work of Jonathon Wells, a nationally recognized artist who pairs fine art photography and geology. The exhibit was in the Olin-Rice Science Building.
The Inland Sea - U.S. Premiere
Also, relevant to several themes of this year’s Northland Bioneers Conference was the Macalester Fall theater production of “The Inland Sea” By Naomi Wallace, directed by Beth Cleary, November 13 at 2:00 PM, November 17, 18 and 19 at 7:30 PM. This is the U.S. premiere of MacArthur "genius" playwright Naomi Wallace's play about 1760’s rural England: the landed gentry want the landscape to look just so, and the peasants who will be displaced to make the perfect views start to feel their collective strength in numbers. The play pits class against class, man against woman, living against dead -- in Wallace's evocative language, provocative scenes, and vision of complex hope.
