Gemma Bulos, founder of the non-profit A Single Drop (ASD), addresses global freshwater issues through technology, empowerment and song. Gemma’s musical mission for peace is culminated in her message entitled Water, Music and Unity: A Pathway to Peace and Global Harmony. This message bridges art and activism to inspire environmental stewardship as a means to cultivate peace.
Gemma’s global peace mission has evolved into humanitarian efforts to address the 1.1 billion people in the world who lack access to freshwater. ASD projects include the Million Voice Choir, Women Water Keepers and Bringing H2OPE: SafeWater For All People. The lyrics for WE RISE carry the message of peace and harmony giving the Million Voice Choir a unified voice for waters’ cause. Women Water Keepers empower women who have a traditional role in water collection and are responsible for the health and welfare of their households. Bringing H2OPE offers simple technology trainings as a means to create local water organizations as cooperatives through micro-enterprise and empowering them as a source of expertise in water resources.
ASD helps people to create a relationship with water. Understanding our mysterious and spiritual connection to water and the need to be reverent, ASD encourages individuals to take a more active role as interdependent stewards of water. This steward role can facilitate a greater understanding of what can be done to affect change outside our own communities.
Gemma is the recipient of the prestigious Echoing Green Fellowship Award, 2007 and the Queen Latifah Cover Girl Vibes Award, 2006. This recognition of her work has allowed ASD to bring Gemma’s mission into reality. Gemma is honored to be included in the 2007 Northland Bioneers Conference.
